Steps to Apply for OSAP

Step 1: Gather Your Information


Before starting your application, collect all the necessary information, including the following:

  • Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • Ontario Education Number (OEN) (if applicable)
  • Bank account information
  • Bank account information


Step 2: Create an OSAP Account


Begin by creating an account on the OSAP website. Upon registration, you will receive a username and password for accessing your application.


Step 3: Complete the Application


The OSAP application consists of several sections. Provide the following information:

  • Personal and academic background
  • Program of study and institution details
  • Financial situation, including income and expenses


OSAP will evaluate this information to determine your eligibility for financial assistance.


Step 4: Submit Your Application


After completing your application, submit it online via your OSAP account. Include any necessary supporting documentation, such as income tax returns and proof of enrollment.


Step 5: Review Your Application and Accept the Offer


OSAP will review your application and send you a financial assistance offer. Log in to your OSAP account to review the offer and accept it if the amount is satisfactory.


Step 6: Receive Your Funding



Upon accepting the offer, OSAP will release the funding to your school. Utilize the funds to cover tuition, books, and other educational expenses.

  3. Residency Information: The form may inquire about the student's residency status, including their legal status in Canada and the province of Ontario.
  4. Family Information: In some cases, it may ask for information about the student's parents or spouse, including their income, assets, and relevant details for determining financial need.
  5. Education Information: This information is about the student's educational history, such as previous schools attended, program of study, enrollment status, and expected graduation date.
  6. Declaration and Certification: The affidavit typically includes a section where the student must declare that the information provided is true and accurate to the best of their knowledge. It may also include a certification clause, where the student acknowledges that providing false information can have legal consequences.


Preparing your OSAP Affidavit


An affidavit is a sworn written statement serving as evidence in legal proceedings. For OSAP, it verifies specific information provided in your application to ensure accuracy and truthfulness.


As part of the application process, you may need to provide various types of information or supporting documentation, the affidavit may include the following details:


  • Common-law status
  • Sole support parent (widowed or never married)
  • Separated, divorced, or widowed (no dependent children)
  • Indigenous identity (if official documentation is unavailable)
  • Spouse income verification (Canadian non-taxable and/or foreign income)
  • Parent income verification (Canadian non-taxable and/or foreign income)
  • Marital status


Note that providing false information on an OSAP application or submitting a false affidavit is considered fraud and carries serious consequences.

When applying for the continuation of interest-free status during a co-op work term, you need to enter the dates of your co-op work term when the application prompts you for the "study dates" to be updated.
